Aging in Place
Many of our customers have come to us with this new concept of “Aging in Place”. They are looking for us to renovate their house to allow them to stay in a home they have curated a life around, rather than selling, moving, and re-creating a home. They want to spend their retirement years surrounded by familiarity, not readjusting to an unfamiliar environment. There are many facets to consider when working on a custom renovation to create a more functional and safe home. Below is a look at the three main areas we assess for changes to embrace the concept of Aging in Place.
Aging in place brings a sense of permanence to a customer’s lifestyle. However, they should not have to compromise elegance for safety, accessibility, and functionality. The first area we assess is the master bedroom, primarily the shower and toilet area. For the shower we analyze how best to make it wheelchair or walker accessible and useable for aging or disabilities, including zero edge entrances, built in benches, handheld shower heads, and grab-bars that can be masked as soap holders or towel racks. Then we look at the toilet area and install items such as comfort height toilets, bidets or urinals, and grab-bars that can also hold toilet paper. In the bedroom (and throughout the rest of the house) we integrate electrical cords to reduce tripping hazards, widen doorways or hallways, and create smooth transitions from room to room.
The third area we look at is the living room/ TV room to make it accessible and functional. We can address sunken living rooms and the technology within. One of our specialties is whole home integrated multi-use systems on a single device, whether it be shutting your blinds, adjusting your air conditioning, or locking all your doors from the comfort of your couch.
Our customers may start considering these changes earlier, before they are actually needed, carefully weighing the pros and cons of a “what if scenario”. However, not all of them want to “let the cat out of the bag” as far as their need for adaptive equipment or assistive technology. That is why we pride ourselves in integrating these features into a home. In one of our remodels we created an adaptive kitchen, including features such as: spring-loaded lifts for heavy items (like their mixer), an oven door style microwave, and roll out shelves for easier access.
We want to bring ADA-regulation features into your home, that fit seamlessly with your lifestyle. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for more information on any of our previous projects, or how to integrate any of these types of changes in your home.
